Me leading D Climb in 1979 with Ed Bollack. This is one of the earliest pictures I have climbing at the Heights.
Ed on the D climb belay ledge in 1979, his first second of a
multi-pitch route ever. Check out the sketchy gear! Ed and I went on
to do many rock, ice, and mountain climbs together over the years.
Me rappelling down the sign in 1978. Photo by Ray Franklin, who was
one of the people that introduced me to the Heights in the 70s.
Scott McClurg standing on top of Maryland Heights with Harper's Ferry
in the background. I think everyone has pictures of themselves
standing here.
Scott at Gene's restaurant after a good day of climbing. For several
years there was a great restaurant in Harper's Ferry, we eventually
became good friends with the owner. It was traditional to go there
after climbing for a beer in the mid 80s.
Me and Ed posing after spending the day on the Sign route that goes
across the sign diagonally..
Hard-Up was the definete classic route at Maryland Heights, so here's
a series of some of my climbing partners on this route. This is
Scott, another long-time companion on many road trips.
Me on Hard-Up. This same photo is in the new Maryland Heights Guide book.
Paul Clancy, who I spent much time crashing on his floor till I found
a cheap place to live near Shepherdstown. Paul was a nursing student
at the time, then later became an ER doctor. He still lives in Wva,
where he's a rural MD.
That's my foot in an old pair of EBs, which are also in this picture, looking much worse for wear.
Dru Marshall was a high-school buddy of Paul's that I climbed with
many times. Dru also moved to Colorado, where we continued to climb
together.
